Patrick Topping: From Newcastle Clubs to Global Tech‑House Icon
Patrick Topping (born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1989) is a British DJ, producer, and tastemaker credited with modernizing tech‑house while preserving its roots in Chicago house and Detroit techno. He began DJing in 2009 at local venues like Motion at Digital, later earning mentorship from Jamie Jones and releasing his debut EP in 2013 on Hot Creations.
His breakthrough came in 2014 with the track “Forget”, which became Ibiza’s Track of the Season and earned him both Newcomer DJ and Track of the Season awards at the DJ Awards, as well as DJ Mag’s Tune of the Year in their Best of British Awards. He followed this with club staples like “Be Sharp Say Nowt” (2017), which went silver in the UK in 2021, and high-crunch collaborations such as “Voicemail” (with Green Velvet) and “When Is Now.” Topping has racked up at least 11 Beatport #1s including hits like “Get Beasty” and “Forget.”
In 2018, he was awarded Tech House DJ of the Year, and in 2022 he won Best British DJ at DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards. His remix of Kevin Saunderson’s “Frisk” featured on The Batman (2022) soundtrack, while he has also remixed names like Calvin Harris, Sam Fender, Robyn, The Streets, and Paul Johnson.
In 2019 he founded his own label and event series—Trick—which has grown into a globally recognised brand hosting festivals in Tenerife, Newcastle, and Budapest, and supporting acts like Ewan McVicar and Ben Hemsley. He holds residencies at major venues including Ibiza’s Hï and Paradise at DC‑10, and tours festivals such as Tomorrowland, Coachella, Ultra, and Awakenings.
Patrick Topping’s blend of raw energy, technical precision, forward-thinking production, and community-building has cemented his reputation as one of the most influential figures in contemporary house and tech‑house.
