Paul van Dyk: The Iconic Global Trance Pioneer
Matthias Paul (born December 16, 1971, in Eisenhüttenstadt, East Germany) — known worldwide as Paul van Dyk — is one of the most influential figures in electronic dance music. Starting in the early 1990s, he emerged as a trance pioneer and helped bring the genre from underground clubs to global stages.
His career-defining track For an Angel (initially released in 1994, remixed in 1998) remains a timeless anthem — topping the UK Dance Chart, being voted among the greatest dance tracks of all time, and celebrated in a 30-year anniversary double-vinyl reissue in 2024. Other standout hits include Nothing but You (2003), which charted high in the UK and US dance charts, and White Lies (2007), which reached #3 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart.
His 2003 album Reflections marked a historic moment: van Dyk became the first artist ever nominated for a Grammy Award in the newly created Best Dance/Electronic Album category.
Beyond his recordings, Paul van Dyk has amassed an impressive tally of accolades: twice named World’s No. 1 DJ by critics and fans, first by Mixmag in 2005 and again by multiple outlets thereafter. His impact is further reflected in album sales — by 2008 he had sold over 3 million albums worldwide.
Still active decades into his career, van Dyk continues to evolve: he launched a new global tour series and released fresh music in 2024, while maintaining a residency at Shine Ibiza’s flagship trance night, showing that his artistry remains as vital as ever.
