Let’s meetup for Black Coffee!
Black Coffee: The Afro-House Maestro Who Bridged Continents
Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, better known as Black Coffee (born 11 March 1976, Durban, South Africa), is a globally renowned DJ, producer and label-head celebrated for marrying deep house, soulful vocals and Afro-rhythms. He launched his debut self-titled album in 2005 via his label Soulistic Music, setting the stage for a career rooted in African musical identity and global ambition.
Black Coffee’s breakthrough tracks include “Drive” (with David Guetta & Delilah Montagu) released in 2018, which charted successfully in South Africa and expanded his global audience. He also achieved a number one in South African airplay with the 2019 single “LaLaLa” (featuring Usher).
In 2022, Black Coffee became the first African DJ to win a Grammy Award, taking home Best Dance/Electronic Album for Subconsciously (2021). He has also been honored with multiple South African Music Awards (SAMAs), a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa (2016) and a DJ Award in Ibiza (2016) for Best Deep House DJ.
With residencies at Ibiza’s Hï and stages at Coachella, Tomorrowland and Ultra, Black Coffee has become a global ambassador for Afro-house. His live sets are known for blending deep grooves, live instrumentation and emotive vocal tracks that transcend the club floor.
Black Coffee’s fusion of tradition and innovation—African roots and international appeal—has not only broken boundaries but redefined what a global house DJ can be.
