Bassrush presents: Road to Apocalypse (Zombieland) with Barely Alive @ Exchange LA (21+)
Let’s meetup for Barely Alive!
Barley Alive: Architects of Modern Dubstep Mayhem
Barely Alive is the Massachusetts-born dubstep duo comprising childhood friends Matt Meier and Willie Watkins, now based in Long Beach, California. Since launching in 2013, they’ve built a reputation as genre-blurring sound designers, fusing heavy dubstep and riddim with synthwave and trap elements, and earning their place as one of the first acts signed to Disciple Records.
Their debut Disciple EP, Lost in the Internet (2014), introduced their raw yet melodic aggression, leading to their first full-length album We Are Barely Alive in 2015 and the follow-up Odyssey in 2018, both of which underscored their pioneering sound and high-concept production (Wikipedia). Standout tracks like “Dial Up,” “Doggo,” “Dead Link,” and “Basement Dwellers” (with Virtual Riot) became staples in bass music sets and playlists.
Their collaborations span heavyweights such as Virtual Riot, 12th Planet, Snails, and Getter; they’ve also remixed genre icons like Excision, Zomboy, DJ Snake, and Eptic. Praised for their technical purity and innovative production, all three of their recent Splice sample pack releases reached #1 on the platform, further solidifying their influence among fellow producers.
Barely Alive toured extensively across North America and Europe, including headlining global bass festivals and joining forces with labelmates in the Disciple Alliance series. They were awarded Best Producers at the 2016 Drum & Bass Awards, a testament to their genre-leading sound design and creative ambition.
With a blend of bombastic sound design, intellectual polish, and electronic authenticity, Barely Alive continues to push the boundaries of dubstep, maintaining a dedicated global fanbase and deep respect within the bass community.
