Let’s meetup for “Between The Beats,” a look into the San Francisco EDM/rave scene of the early 90s with special guest Kevin Saunderson!
The film, directed by Martin O’Brien, produced by O’Brien and Mike Koeppel and edited by Robbie Proctor, features DJ Harvey, DJ Dan, DJ Doc Martin, DJ Garth, DJ Tony, Joe Haller, Ethan Miller, Brian Behlendorf, and other major players in San Francisco’s blissful early 90s rave scene and its powerful influence across the world.
Energetic and inspiring, ‘Between The Beats’ examines the do-it-yourself mentality and psychedelic community spirit that the San Francisco Bay Area rave scene epitomized.
Kevin Saunderson: The Originator of Techno
Kevin Saunderson is a pioneering force in electronic music, widely recognized as one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno. As a member of the legendary Belleville Three—alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May—Saunderson helped shape the sound that revolutionized dance music globally. His innovative productions laid the groundwork for techno’s evolution while influencing generations of electronic music artists.
Under his Inner City project, Kevin achieved mainstream success with iconic hits like “Good Life” and “Big Fun.” These tracks became international anthems, blending soulful vocals with the driving beats of techno, and earning gold records in the UK. Inner City’s groundbreaking success not only brought techno to a wider audience but also cemented Saunderson’s reputation as a visionary producer.
Beyond his work with Inner City, Kevin’s impact extends through his solo productions, remixes, and KMS Records label, which has been instrumental in fostering techno’s growth. He has performed at legendary venues and festivals worldwide, including Movement Detroit, Tomorrowland, and Glastonbury, receiving numerous accolades for his contributions to music.
